Bollywood Actress in Bikini has always made news and sometimes gathered people too in large numbers at the Box Office window to buy tickets.

Still woman in bikini is a head turner as same as it was when in showgirl Micheline Bernardini wore it for the first time in Paris on July 5, 1946 for designer Louis Réard.

Why It Is Called Bikini?

Designer Louis Réard thought he created something that would have an explosive cultural and global impact. So, he named it after Bikini Atoll in Marshall Islands, which is a site for testing atom bombs.

Well, he was not wrong. Bikini has been controversial ever since for various reasons in different parts of the world and culture.

Some of them are; objectifying women, Obsession for size zero among women etc.

First One Piece Bikini in Bollywood

Meenakshi Shirodkar, grandmother of actresses Namrata and Shilpa Shirodkar considered one of the earliest women to wore a one-piece bikini on the screen in 1938 movie Brahmachari.

After that Nargis also spotted in swimsuit-clad in Awara (1951). Nutan also wore a one-piece bikini in her movie. Tanuja Chandra sported one in the movie, Chand Aur Suraj (1965) but these in these scenes actresses always been shown covering their bikinis with some cloth drapping around their waist or something.

Two-Piece Bikini in Bollywood

The two-piece bikini came to Bollywood in August 1966 when actress Sharmila Tagore wore it for the first time for Filmfare magazine. Sharmila later married to cricketer Nawab Pataudi and now mother of actor of Saif Ali Khan & Soha Ali Khan

This one of its kind superhot bold photo shoot created waves and an outrage which was never seen, it also started a nation-wide debate on the morality and the image of Indian women.

But it never stopped her from wearing the bikini again in a movie for the first time confidently without covering anything with any cloth in song ‘Aasmaan Se Aaya Farishta’ in movie An Evening in Paris (1967).

This made the introduction of this skimpy garment on silver screen openly.

70’s Actress in Bikini

Still there were not many A list actresses who appeared in bikini for few years but then Zeenat Aman came into the industry.

She was the first Indian woman to win the Miss Asia Pacific title and she wear it many times comfortably in her many films. She also become the India’s first sex symbol of the film industry.

Dimple Kapadia make her debut with Bobby (1973) and wear bikini in it. Movie become a huge hit and producers started to think bikini scene in movies to attract audience.

Mumtaz also did help it seep into the Indian consciousness by coming on-screen in bikini.

But, actresses who get ready to wear bikini on screen considered to be VERY BOLD actress all those years.

80’s Actress in Bikini

Parveen Babi in movie Yeh Nazdeekiyan (1982) wears bikini. One-piece bikini also was popular among actresses who was not comfortable wearing two-piece.

Madhuri Dixit sported the sports style bikini in the movie Tezaab (1988).

90’s Actress in Bikini

In 90’s bikinis got inspired from American Show Baywatch become very popular. Instead of curvy body structure of 70’s and 80’s actresses with fit body were given importance.

Kajol & Shilpa Shetty both were spotted in bikini in movie Baazigar (1992).

Juhi Chawla in Darr (1993), Urmila Matondkar in Rangeela (1995) & Sonali Bendre in Takkar (1995) also sizzles the silver screen in bikini.
